Pescara Abruzzo Airport
Abruzzo Airport, Strada Statale, Pescara, ItalyFacts and History about Pescara Abruzzo Airport
Abruzzo Airport, also known as Pescara Airport or Pescara Abruzzo Airport, is an international airport in the Italian region of Abruzzo, and it is the only international airport serving the region. The airport’s IATA code is PSR and the ICAO code is LIBP.
It is located around 4 km/2.5 mi from the center of Pescara on the Adriatic coast and around 180km/112 mi from Rome, Italy’s capital city.
The airport is situated along state road 5 Via Tiburtina Valeria with good connections to other important roads such as Autostrada A25 and Autostrada A14 as well as SS714 Tangenziale di Pescara.
Abruzzo Airport serves an important role for aerial transportation and connections for the Abruzzo region, but also for other, neighboring, regions.
The airport’s history begins in 1917 when the airfield was first built after a bombing of Pescara. In 1927 the airport was expanded and modernized.
Commercial aviation began in 1933 when flight service between the airport and Rome Urbe Airport started up with three flights a week. At the time an intermediate stop at an airfield near L’Aguila was needed.
More routes and airlines were added to the airport after WWII and the airport’s traffic kept expanding from there and it was a part of opening up the area for tourism in the 1970s, but in 1979 the airline Itavia was forced to suspend all flights to and from Pescara due to the revision of the minimum landing requirements implemented by ANPAC, the National Association of Civil Aviation Pilots, on some Italian Airports, leading to a decrease in flights operated at the airport and the airport found themselves without any flights.
From 1981 to 1983 Aermediterranea operated a route to Milano, through Ancona, a route that was later replaced by other airlines before a direct route was finally into operation in 1988.
The old building was converted into technical and logistical support and a new terminal was built in 1996 offering more comfort and higher efficiency of service.
The airport saw an increase in passengers from 114,000 in the year 2000 to over 600,000 in 2015, mainly due to the low cost airlines that operate at the airport.
The airport has gone through a series of development work between 2008 and 2019 including redesigns, modernizations, expansions, builds of the terminal areas as well as the airport’s area, runway, parking, safety and security systems. The upgrading includes both the airside and the landside areas, and there are more to come with a master plan for the airport’s development in place for an overall cost of €33 million.
The airport saw 703,386 passengers and 36,695 aircrafts come through it in 2019, which is the highest number in a year so far in the airport’s existence.
